Grading 1986 Topps Football

The set that makes the 1986 Fleer look easy to grade

Among vintage football collectors, the 1986 Topps Football set occupies a singular position: it is the most condition-sensitive modern-era football set in existence, containing the rookie cards of two top-five all-time players, and it grades brutally.

The 1986 Fleer Basketball has a Jordan rookie with roughly a 0.4% gem rate. The 1986 Topps Football Steve Young RC has a 0.06% gem rate. That is approximately 6.5x more condition-scarce than the Jordan. Eight PSA 10 copies exist out of roughly 13,000 graded.

To put that in human terms: if you submitted 1,000 Steve Young rookie cards to PSA, statistically fewer than one would grade a 10.

Why 1986 Topps grades so harshly

The 1986 Topps Football production shares characteristics with the worst-grading vintage football sets:

Print quality. Topps used a standard newsprint-adjacent cardstock in 1986 that is susceptible to print defects, surface chipping, and corner wear. The printing registration was imprecise, creating chronic centering issues that eliminate many copies from PSA 10 consideration before any physical condition is even evaluated.

Corner vulnerability. The thin card stock corners chip and fray under almost any handling. A card that has been stored in a binder sleeve for 40 years will almost certainly show corner wear. Finding four sharp corners on a 1986 Topps Football card in 2026 is genuinely rare.

Surface print lines. Many copies of the key cards in this set exhibit print lines — faint parallel marks from the production process — that are invisible to the naked eye under normal lighting but visible under LED examination and fatal to a PSA 10 grade.

Centering. Like most 1986-era Topps production, the print sheets ran with inconsistent centering. The Young and Rice rookies are particularly prone to left/right centering issues.

The key cards and their populations

#374 — Steve Young RC: 8 PSA 10s, 0.06% gem rate, ~$168,000

Steve Young is the all-time leader in career passer rating. Six-time Pro Bowler. Super Bowl MVP. His rookie card in PSA 10 is one of the rarest Hall of Fame cards in the hobby from any era. The 8 existing PSA 10 copies have been in active auction circulation for years; these are not hidden inventory — the hobby knows about them and prices them accordingly.

#161 — Jerry Rice RC: ~0.15% gem rate, ~$75,000 in PSA 10

Jerry Rice is universally considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history. His 1986 Topps RC has been submitted in enormous quantities — over 6,000 graded copies — and achieves a PSA 10 at a 0.15% rate. That means approximately 9 PSA 10 copies exist. One of the handful of truly "impossible" cards in modern football.

#389 — Reggie White RC: Low PSA 10 population

White's rookie card is significantly less discussed than Rice or Young but is condition-scarce in its own right. The card regularly exhibits print defects and centering issues that keep the PSA 10 population extremely low. Often overlooked because White's cultural footprint is smaller, but the condition rarity is comparable.

Who should be buying these cards

PSA 10 buyers: This is a holy-grail-tier purchase. You are acquiring one of the 8–9 known PSA 10 copies in existence of a card representing a top-five all-time player. At these prices, you are a collector-investor operating at the top of the market. Liquidity is thin by definition — there are not many buyers at $168,000, but there are not many sellers either.

PSA 8–9 buyers: The PSA 8 and 9 copies represent the most accessible entry point to true condition rarity. A PSA 9 Young at $4,000–$8,000 is a different risk profile than the PSA 10 — it is a high-grade copy of a scarce-in-any-grade card, owned for the player and the set, not for the graded perfection premium.

Raw card buyers: If you can evaluate raw cards accurately under LED lighting, raw 1986 Topps Football offers the best opportunity in the set. Sellers who don't know what they have price raw copies as standard vintage cards. Buyers who can identify gem-potential copies have extracted significant value here historically.
