eBay SEO Considerations
eBay is not a store. It is a search engine.
Most sellers treat eBay like a store window — they put their cards up, write casual descriptions, and wait. The buyers who find them are the ones who happened to scroll past.
Top sellers treat eBay like Google. Every listing is a document that either answers a buyer's search query or doesn't. The difference between a listing that sells in 24 hours and one that sits for 30 days is usually the title — specifically the first 55 characters.
Why 55 characters?
eBay allows 80 characters in a listing title. But on mobile devices — where over 60% of eBay browsing happens — only the first 55 characters are visible in search results before the title truncates. If your critical identifying information is in characters 60–80, mobile buyers never see it.
The rule: everything that identifies the card must be in the first 55 characters.
The 7-element title formula
Build every title in this element order:
[PLAYER NAME] [YEAR] [BRAND] [SET] [CARD TYPE] [TEAM] [SPORT]
Then use remaining characters for: [GRADE] [GRADING COMPANY] [PARALLEL VARIANT]
Example — bad title (62 characters before grade):
Patrick Mahomes Kansas City Chiefs 2017 Panini Prizm Silver RC PSA 10
The grade is at the end and mobile buyers may not see it. The team appears before the year, violating search intent order.
Example — optimized title (PSA 10 visible at character 49):
Mahomes 2017 Panini Prizm Silver RC PSA 10 Chiefs
The buyer searching for "Mahomes 2017 Prizm PSA 10" finds an exact match in the first 42 characters. The team adds context in the remaining space.
The element priority rules
Player name first, always. Buyers search for players. Starting with anything else reduces relevance for the most common search query type.
Year second. Year is the second most common filter. Front-loading it ensures your listing surfaces in year-specific searches.
Brand and set before card type. "Panini Prizm Silver RC" is how buyers search. "Silver Prizm RC Panini" is not.
Grade in characters 40–55. For graded cards, the grade (PSA 10, BGS 9.5, SGC 10) must appear before the 55-character cutoff. It is often the deciding factor in a buyer's click.
Avoid keyword stuffing. Titles like "Mahomes ROOKIE PSA 10 INVEST🔥 HOT" trigger eBay's spam filters and reduce Best Match ranking. Write titles that read like human search queries.
Weaponizing Item Specifics
Item Specifics are the structured data fields beneath the listing title — Year, Sport, Team, Player, Card Manufacturer, Grade, Card Number, Set, and others. Most sellers leave these partially filled or blank. This is a critical mistake.
eBay's algorithm uses Item Specifics to categorize and surface listings in filtered searches. A buyer who filters "Basketball Cards → 2017 → Panini → PSA 10" will only see listings where those Item Specifics are filled in correctly. If yours are blank, you are invisible to filtered searches.
Fill every applicable Item Specific, even if it feels redundant with the title. The algorithm treats title and Item Specifics as separate signals. Complete both.
Key Item Specifics for basketball and football cards:
- Year of Manufacture
- Sport
- Team
- Player/Athlete
- Card Manufacturer (Panini, Topps, Fleer, etc.)
- Set Name
- Card Number
- Grade (if graded)
- Grading Company
- Parallel/Variety
Photography and friction reduction
Best Match scores also incorporate seller metrics and listing quality signals. Two practices that directly improve these:
Consistent lighting. Photograph every card under the same light source, same angle, same background. Buyers have been burned by misleading photography. Consistent, honest photos build trust and reduce returns — both of which improve your seller metrics.
30-day return policy. Listings with 30-day returns rank higher in Best Match than no-return listings for comparable items. The data shows that sellers with generous return policies have lower actual return rates — because buyers trust the transaction and don't panic-return on minor issues.
